The Brin-L mailing list is almost my second home! We discuss the works of science fiction author David Brin, and to a lesser extent, Greg Benford and Greg Bear. We also discuss just about anything else, because, as Norwegian list member Eythain Lazh said, "All is Brin." In his essay "The Good and the Bad", David Brin wrote, about the ultimate results of the internet, and his cause, the "Transparent Society", "Everyone will know how much you paid for your nose job, and what videos you rent; but you and your kids will have friends in every part of the world, whom you met through shared interests on the Net. And when you travel, those friends will pick you up at the airport with wide open arms, even though you never laid eyes on them before in your life." Some of our members have experienced this. (No, not the nose job -- but there may be rumors about that later... ;-)) For example, last week, Michael Harney dropped by to visit Julia Thompson, on his way to meet the dolphins he loves so much, and Hector and Doug visited Vera at work. I just got back from visiting Dee and Eythain at Jo Anne Bird's house, in Oregon. Unfortunately, Dee and I returned home too soon to meet Vera when she visited Portland. In other news, I'd like to thank Erik Reuter for providing me with the
domain name Brin-L.org for use with
this site. Not only did he pay the initial registration fee for the
domain, but he also paid the transfer fee to give it to me.
